I've modified this recipe so much it barely resembles the original! I'm rating it 4 stars regardless, considering it gave me a starting point to what is now one of my family's favorite dinners........... A few things I exercise is double (or more) the rice, add a can of cream of mushroom, a package of pea pods, 1/2 package of mix veggies, sliced water chestnuts, mushrooms, minced garlic, and celery seed instead of fresh. For the almonds I utilise Almond Accents (original). They're paper thin and pre-salted. These are a necessity in our opinion. Nosotros likewise serve our noodles on the side so they don't get mushy and everyone can add to their own personal taste. I utilise rice noodles. The ones that look simply like chow mein noodles, merely a tad thinner. We prefer these and they only cost a few cents more than.

I am giving this 5 stars because, even though I didn't follow it exactly, it inspired me to create a recipe that my family LOVED. My married man has always loved hamburger helper's Rice Oriental and so I browned the hamburger with onion powder and garlic salt (my 3 year one-time recoils at anything with chunks of onion) then added the rice, water, almonds and soy sauce. I am not a huge fan of condensed cream soups and then I just made a quick gravy/sauce past combining about two tsp of corn starch and water. The flavor was JUST like hamburger helper and the almonds were a wonderful touch. Much, much healthier and cheaper. I will definitely exist making this again!!!

I didn't follow this recipe also closely, merely it was a easy to gear up meal. I used foam of mushroom rather than cream of chicken soup. Didn't take celery or almonds. I really think the extra crunch would have been nice, it was a petty mushy and didn't accept much texture without. If I brand once more I will probably follow the recipe more closely.

My mom use to make this when I was a child. I was craving it yesterday so looked here and plant this recipie. It was perfect. I didn't put in the almonst, since my husband hates them, and used cream of mushroom instead of cream of chicken, because it sounded amend. Hit the spot. Easy weeknight meal.
01/03/2007
My husband really enjoyed this. I added fresh garlic to the hamburger and didn't accept almonds so used water chestnuts. Information technology's a good addition to my everyday recipes but wouldn't hesitate to serve to company either. We added our own soy sauce to sense of taste at the table.
01/07/2012
This was a proficient tasty meal in one dish. It reminded me of those canned chow mein dinners we grew upward on, only I liked this much better. It merely needed some garlic, ginger, and more than veggies like bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, and water chestnuts to make this top notch. I doubled the rice and cut the onion in half. I added a fiddling garlic to the meat equally it cooked. I didn't actually measure out the chow mein noodles, only covered the tiptop with them. We will definitely set up this over again.
02/14/2003
This was very good. I took it to work for dejeuner and actually had people finish and tell me how good it smelled! I took some of the advice from other reviews and added a can of h2o chestnuts to this. I as well toasted the almonds to bring out more of the season. Thank you! Good recipe!
04/17/2003
I upped the rice to 2c and like so many others, used cream of mushroom soup instead. Other than that, followed the recipe to the letter. Pretty skilful stuff, not gourmet by it is a homey, filling dinner. Thank you
07/02/2007
I replaced the ground beef with beef stew meat that cooked in the ho-hum cooker all twenty-four hour period! Likewise, I added a tin of chop suey vegetables. I would also suggest adding a can of h2o chestnuts. Yummy!
02/28/2002
We loved information technology! I added just a niggling more celery and no almonds, because of my married man. We left the tabular array without whatsoever leftovers....so I volition exist doubling it adjacent fourth dimension. My teenagers loved it also!! Thank you for the recipe!
02/19/2008
This is only what I was looking for. Made the recipe equally stated, except didn't employ any almonds and used a lot more celery. I loved it! I would utilise nearly 1/2 cup more rice next time, and maybe attempt foam of celery. But overall I thought it had a great taste, very comforting.
06/eleven/2007
This is banal, even with the suggested water chestnuts. Some have called it comfort food, only we found it boring.
01/22/2003
I made some changes to suit our family's tastes... I used crm of mush, added h2o chestnuts and substituted cashews for the almonds. I also jazzed up the beef with some spices - an asian alloy I take. It was very tasty. Will serve again for certain!
10/27/2011
This has been a become to quick and cheap repast in my family for ages. Over the years I have changed the recipe and added a packet of onion soup mix, two teaspoons of granulated garlic, i bunch chopped green onions and 1 tin can of sliced h2o chestnuts
02/29/2008
This is a proficient recipe. I halved the recipe, but left ane lb of hamburger and the whole tin can of soup, and about ane cup of rice, and so cooked in an 8x8 pan. I used celery seed instead of bodily celery. Next time I brand this, I will utilize water chesnuts instead of the almonds.
08/07/2002
This recipe was fast and easy! The only suggestions I would make are to add more than soy sauce and less celery. The celery tended to exist a bit overpowering and the soy flavor was a footling transparent. Otherwise, it was great! Information technology made much more than I thought information technology would!
01/10/2009
we've made this i a several times at present and is even so surprisingly delicious! (although, we accept dubbed this dish: 'Pile', it tastes better than information technology looks) This is a very forgiving recipe besides- water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, throw it in if its sounds expert! I like to eat mine with extra soy sauce...
06/26/2011
Banal.
12/xxx/2007
My grandma utilize to make this recipe and then when I found it I was very excited. I love this casserole, it'south a bang-up comfort dish.
10/28/2011
This was really good for something different at my house. the kids loved it and all had seconds volition make it once more.
11/01/2011
New version of my grandmother's old comfort food recipe. My 3 & 5 year olds both liked = success!
01/20/2008
For this recipe, I changed years agone, skipped the almonds, changed ii cans BEEFY MUSHROOM SOUP for the cream of chicken, and ii cups cooked rice in place of one plus ane/4 teaspoon fresh footing pepper.
01/30/2008
Fabricated this for the 1st time Monday and from the time I got home from piece of work until we were eating was 45 minutes. Wife loved it and gave it 4 stars. Subsequently she finished her fourth helping she upped it to v stars. I threw in some chopped upwardly chicken leftovers, put in water chestnuts and a piddling more than soy sauce, swell thing about casseroles, can add just about anything.
10/30/2005
For what it is--an piece of cake to fix casserole--this ane gets five stars from me. The taste isn't sophisticated, but with a really good side dish (I used Asian Coleslaw, available on this website), the casserole really comes alive. I had it twice today. Side by side fourth dimension, I'll probably make a double batch. If y'all are looking for tasty and hearty family unit fare with a very likeable and familiar flavor--this might be it! I love the crunch that the noodles provide. If yous reheat information technology, the noodles volition soften, so for leftovers, you may wish to add together fresh noodles to retain the crunchy consistency. I volition probably add together water chestnuts and maybe some Chinese veggies next time. Great stuff!
05/03/2008
This was a quick and succulent weekday meal...truthful comfort food that warmed and filled our bellies! I added some table salt and pepper and garlic powder to the ground beedf while browning. I too threw in some beansprouts fro actress crisis. I used about a loving cup of noodles which I stirred right into the casserole and saved a handful to sprinkle on superlative. I was very satisfied with the finished casserole and it tasted even better the next day as leftovers for lunch! Volition definitely make this again!
01/24/2008
My mom used to brand this when I was younger - it was my favorite. Since then I have made it for my husband and whoever else was over at the time and people always bluster and rave and say they never knew I was such a proficient cook =) I use a can of cream of chix too, just too add tin of cream of celery and then milk to thin out. I also add mushrooms and more rice - not sure how much more - plenty and so it isn't soupy. I nearly definitely is comfort food!
03/02/2008
I know this is a staple in households every where, so I thought I would give it a try. My kids were very willing to endeavor information technology, but but didn't like information technology. I ate it, to avoid having it get to waste - I would say information technology was OK, just not adept. If y'all need something quick to fill a space, this is it. Yet, it'south nothing to write abode to Mom nigh.
10/22/2006
This is comfort nutrient for me... my aunt, who is at present 90 years old, used to make her version of information technology for me and my brother when nosotros were children. Then I do it her way. Cream of mushroom soup. And my way... add a bag of stir-fry veggies, some red pepper flakes, ginger, garlic powder... nix the almonds. Sometimes, I add a bit of stir-fry sauce to jazz it up, but whatever, I dearest it!
02/06/2008
I made this because I had all the ingredients on hand, plus a ton of chow mein noodles that I needed to use up. It was surprisingly actually practiced! I did modify it just a bit to suit our tastes... foam of mushroom instead of craven, water chesnuts in identify of the almonds, and added a can of sliced mushrooms. Don't omit the celery! The flavor actually works with this dish. I was agape the soy sauce would be overpowering, simply it was merely correct. This is very filling! Thanks :)
04/25/2009
This recipe has a lot of crisis with the almonds and chow mein noodles, which I really similar in casseroles. It'southward a not bad variation on the traditional hamburger casserole (commonly topped with murphy tots). I didn't want to melt rice separately then I used 90 2nd microwave Teriyaki rice that I had and that worked fine. I besides used mushroom soup instead of the chicken as chicken and beef seemed an odd combination. It was quick and like shooting fish in a barrel to make equally well. I added Asian Medley microwave steamer veggies equally a side. An easy, hearty meal with proficient flavor and crunch.
02/02/2012
boyfriend loved this. I added cream of mushroom, and water chestnuts along with minced garlic and a can of mushroom pieces and stems, like my mom made information technology. She called it Mock Chow Mein.
10/07/2012
My 10yr quondam fabricated this for dinner (with supervision since this was her first attempt at making dinner), and nosotros loved information technology! A very quick, uncomplicated, delicious recipe - thank you for sharing.
09/xv/2011
Such yummy comfort food. I used the chicken soup and added a tin of water chestnuts, and also briwn rice instead of white. A bit healthier and still very tasty.
06/29/2012
I lost this recipe years ago. I am so glad I got it again. Family loves this.
01/08/2011
A really expert, basic recipe. I loved it and devoured the leftovers besides.
05/28/2008
This was just how I remembered it from growing up. Great simple recipe to get dinner on the table. I also add together water chestnuts to it to give it a little more flavor and some garlic.
03/22/2011
I'm then glad I establish this recipe! I first constitute this recipe in an erstwhile, one-time Betty Crocker cookbook - and so I lost the cookbook! When I make it, when I have it, I add ground pork west/the hamburger - it really ups the flavour. Then, I add to the meat, and the sauce, minced fresh garlic and ginger and (extra) soy sauce. That takes it really over the top and adds that Chinese flavor nigh people look for! I prefer cashews to almonds only that's just me! Oh, and since I was out of the Chicken Rice canned soup, I just subbed the equivalent amount of a chicken broth that I made from a skillful quality craven base I proceed on hand; since the soup is condensed I added extra a little extra chicken base. Thank you Cindy, for bringing this dish back to me!
07/09/2002
I didn't have whatsoever Cream of Chicken, so I substituted Broccoli Cheese soup and the meal tasted wonderful. This was very easy to make and my toddler loved information technology.
09/24/2011
My kids loved this dish. Next time I think I will put my own twist on it!
10/09/2008
I have a simlar recipe merely instead of the foam of chicken I used cream of mushroom, cream of celery and chicken and rice so just add a 1/2 loving cup of infinitesimal rice...I practice bump up the soy sauce a tad too. I bake it covered for 30 minutes and then remove the comprehend and add together the noodles and bake for additional 10 minutes.
11/12/2009
My husband says I should definitely brand this one again. I agree. I didn't have almonds on hand, so I toasted some sesame seeds. Nosotros really liked that flavor. Other than that, I made no changes. I did melt it about 1/2 hour longer, because we like the noodles on top browned and crispy.
01/16/2011
I have been using a different website that had this recipe, and fabricated this for dinner a lot. I got a new lap pinnacle, and lost the website. I and then establish it on all recipes, and I have to say, that the other recipe was much better. For one, they added both cream of chicken and cream of celery. They besides added v tablesspoons of soy sauce. Their recipe is much better, and creamier. This recipe is somewhat drier, similar crumbled footing beef, and didn't accept that "aisian flare", somehat bland. So yous may want to add together another can of cream soup, and definitely more soy sauce.
04/17/2003
I upped the rice to 2c and like so many others, used cream of mushroom soup instead. Other than that, followed the recipe to the letter. Pretty good stuff, non gourmet by information technology is a homey, filling dinner. Cheers
09/03/2005
This dish turned out wonderful. I added extra seasonings, celery seed, pepper, garlic powder, and a small dash of ruby-red pepper. Very robust, filling and aroma makes yous hungry. The recipe is easy, you don't have to be exact on the amounts, it is very forgiving for the beginners is the kitchen.
01/24/2005
I've made this recipe 4-5 times now and my young daughters all bask it! I also used 2 cups rice and omit the almonds. I did try with cream of mushroom soup once when I didn't take foam of craven on-paw -- the cream of chicken soup definitely tastes better.
03/13/2002
I follwed the suggestion of some other review and used water chestnuts instead of almonds. I also used a little more soy and a lot of black pepper. This was very easy and really quite tasty.
09/22/2006
My family unit has been making this dish for years, but nosotros've never classified it as an 'Asian' dish. After reading some of the review, several people called the dish bland. I like to season the beefiness with ground pepper and a little flake of cumin, as well as calculation garlic and a few dashes of cayenne pepper. Also, make sure you lot use actual chow mein noodles as opposed to rice noodles- yous loose the 'crisis' gene with the tiny rice noodles.
03/xiv/2005
Later on reading all the reviews, I made the following changes: I used 2 cups of rice, I added a large tin can of water chesnuts and I used cream of mushroom soup instead of cream of chicken. I as well added fresh mushrooms when I was sauteeing the onions. I was very happy with the result. It was groovy tasting, easy meal.
11/xx/2008
My mom used to make something similar this when I was a child. She called it "hamburger casserole." I've never had information technology with the soy sauce, it was very proficient.
04/04/2000
Was very good , simply I jassed information technology up a bit, bye adding these ingredients: 1tsp. fresh minced garlic, eight medium size fresh mushrooms sliced, 1-8 ounce can sliced waterchestnuts,1 tablespoon Sherry, pepper to gustatory modality.
12/04/2010
Had to use up flour taco shells so I sliced and put them on the bottom of the greased blistering dish. My children love the oowey goowey shells on bottoms of all caseroles. Cheers Cindy B for a nice recipe.
03/21/2007
Splendid! Though the noodles aren't crunchy when you eat it for left-overs, it yet tastes dandy. Add a little h2o to it when reheating. Succulent!
12/01/2010
I too took the advice of fellow reviewers, and fabricated the post-obit changes: -double the rice -add together a can of foam of mushroom -add together water chesnuts -add garlic Turned out delicious, and will brand again and again!
05/sixteen/2003
I don't add the noodles before baking, I toast them slightly in my toaster oven (watch, don't burn!) and everyone sprinkles them on at the table according to gustatory modality. We likewise laissez passer the soy sauce, and black pepper in case someone wants more. The foam soup can be celery, mushroom or chicken and y'all can add stuff or leave stuff out and adjust to gustatory modality or what y'all have on mitt within reason... It's so versatile! This is then good with a side of fresh fruit salad.
02/06/2009
I thought this was splendid. I would brand a double batch next time and possibly add water chestnuts. Cheap to make and delicious!
12/19/2007
This recipe is OK for the kids just isn't anything special. I made a few changes, cut the onions to a cup, added water chestnuts, added some other cup of rice, added a tbsp of chocolate-brown saccharide, added some fresh diced garlic, and of course some salt and pepper. I liked my recipe improve but my wife said information technology was still missing something.
08/xviii/2006
Great and easy to brand. I also add extra rice and some ginger as most reviewers have noted. If you don't have celery endeavor a tin can of water chestnuts or some Asian-style pea pods for extra crunch and color.
11/27/2011
I tried this this evening with leftover turkey instead of hamburger. Instead of regular rice, I made a package of Uncle Ben'due south wild rice (mushroom flavor) according to the packet directions and added it. I besides added h2o chestnuts. It was great!
04/12/2006
This was really good.
09/14/2005
I am so surprised this wasn't that good! My biggest issue is it was TOO Dry out...I followed other readers suggestions and used ii cups of rice, which I remember was necessary, but I call back information technology needed 2 cans of soup to work with the extra rice, and I only used one equally the original recipe suggested! So, while I like the ingredients, I wouldn't make it once again...if I do, I will attempt it with the extra tin of soup just to meet if that helps.
11/12/2006
Pretty boilerplate. I would have could the chinese noodles within the hotdish.
03/12/2006
This was very expert. My husband & I both enjoyed this a lot. Couldn't find a matter wrong with it.
01/13/2002
Delicious, and very quick & like shooting fish in a barrel to make. Since we like a lot of veggies, I added about 1/2 purse of stir fry vegetables along with some frozen green & carmine peppers. (Information technology would be fine without them, too.)CindyH
05/06/2011
Yummy! I made this for dinner tonight; skipped the almonds (don't like them). Unproblematic and tasty! I would definitely make this once more. Thanks for the recipe!!
11/14/2005
Very cruncy casserole, but pretty bland...fifty-fifty later adding garlic powder and more than soy. Would foam of celery soup exist improve than cream of chicken?
eleven/02/2008
Fast weekday repast. We make ours a piddling different...perchance fifty-fifty easier. Brown i lb hamburger or ground Turkey with 1 small onion chopped. Add: i can foam of Mushroom OR 1 can cream of Chix soup. Plus, 1 can of Chix Noodle Soup, 1 cup instant rice, 1 loving cup water and sliced water chestnuts (optional). Stir in pan and cascade into 9x13 pan - broil at 350 till edges start to chimera. Top with chow mein noodles and back till crisp. It'due south a kid family favorite.
11/17/2014
This is a five star recipe with the following changes and additions: Utilise one tin cream of mushroom, ane can foam of celery. Add one tin of sliced h2o chestnuts. Add either 1 tin can of mushrooms or fresh. Up rice to one and a half cups, you can just pour in uncooked white rice. I have never used beef, I always use ground turkey and it tastes delicious! Broil at 375 for 45-50 min until bubbly, do not put on chow mein noodles until the last ten minutes in oven. Separate noodles so you accept some to acme each serving with for crunch.
05/07/2002
Easy enough but not a large hit with my family unit. My girl said information technology was too salty and she just picked at her plate and hubby didn't like the grub mein noodles so fifty-fifty though I thought this was a good/quick weeknight repast, I don't think I volition be making it again.
05/02/2007
I agree w/others who felt it was banal. Don't think I'll be making this 1 again.
eleven/10/2014
ane 1/two Pds ground beef 2cans cr. mushroom soup 3/four C. Water 2 cups cooked rice Water chestnuts diced 3 1/two T. Soy sauce 2 cans rice noodles two-3 diced fresh garlic 4 stalks or more of celery
11/12/2003
My family thought that this recipe was a little bit banal. If I get in once again I remember that I will add more vegetables and possibly put the chow mein noodles on the bottom so they soften upwards some.
11/18/2012
I've been using this recipe for years and all of my picky eaters love it. The but change I made was to increase the celery! Love it!
06/08/2006
We liked this. I used 1 1/2 cups of rice and that seemed just right for the amount of ground beef. I used ideas from others and added ginger, garlic pulverisation and water chestnuts. I think next time I will add together mushrooms too. Will definitely brand this again soon.
05/22/2009
And so like shooting fish in a barrel & very yummy! I left out the celery (my family doesn't like information technology) & it was still succulent!
08/26/2000
This was a great repast! A keeper. Non a pretty dish simply the tase with the foam of craven soup is unique. I added fresh mushrooms also.
01/31/2003
We loved information technology!!!! Added a can of mushrooms, used foam of mushroom soup and "veggie meat" instead of hamburger. My non-vegetarian husband did not know the divergence. The leftovers were delicious besides. Would recommend only putting the noodles on half if you lot are expecting to take leftovers as they did get soggy.
03/24/2015
Kids all loved information technology...even picky Logan.
01/04/2008
almost like mom'south but non quite
12/13/2013
My teenage daughter approves this dish because information technology reminds her of Hamburger Helper, which is great because this is much healthier! I doubled the rice, used 1.5 lbs of ground beef, only would recommend also doubling the celery. Side by side time, I might add together boosted veggies - mayhap light-green beans, peas, carrot slivers.
01/20/2020
Every bit many others did, I used Foam of Mushroom soup instead of chicken and left out the almonds. Side by side time I will be adding water chestnuts and more veggies. The flavor was great but a little heavy on the hamburger.
11/08/2004
My kids are picky eaters and they abosolutely loved this recipe...as did my husband and I!!!
12/01/2009
This recipe was very very bland. Won't be making again
03/30/2013
This is a really tasty casserole. The merely problem I had was the chow mein noodles started to burn down on top. I had to have some off before I served it. I call up next time I make this, I will add them halfway through the cooking time.
03/09/2020
I take made this before and my family unit actually enjoyed it. This fourth dimension I added 1 can of bean sprouts and 1 tin of sliced water chestnuts for a actually keen oriental flair and it was a hitting!
08/08/2000
Wooo hooo I'm Asian and I loved this!!! Not banal any ( as the rating said before mine!!!). Lots of adept flavor and even my 6 yr erstwhile loved it!!!
12/x/2013
Like others, I used foam of mushroom soup and ii cups of rice. It reminds me of my childhood and then that is why I call back I love this recipe and so much. It's not fancy but it just tastes adept to me.
06/24/2003
I loved information technology, picky married man hated it. I used the mushroom soup instead of the foam of chicken, added h2o chestnuts and Asian spice alloy. Husband said it was besides bland, I thought it could take used some more spices but overall I liked it.
07/21/2000
I thought this was very yummy!!! It tastes even meliorate equally leftovers. I volition exist making this once more!!!!
10/08/2000
Very tasty. Added a trivial Chinese 5-spice powder for a lilliputian bit of kicking.
05/04/2006
This was an okay meal - not bad once in a while, only not a favorite. I also found that doubling the rice and soup made for a meliorate tasting dish.
10/10/2007
My family loved this, nosotros ate the whole thing that night. Information technology's delicious.
09/xvi/2006
Blah! I hated this recipe, but my husband liked it, so nosotros compromised on a iii star rating. I thought it was really bland and wouldn't have eaten information technology if I wasn't as hungry as I was!
02/02/2009
A house guest requested this recipe since his mom used to make it when he was a kid. Information technology was different, not something I would ordinarily brand. I added mushrooms and water chestnuts, used garlic almonds that you discover in the salad section. I also added enough of garlic table salt and pepper. Both of my children loved it, adept condolement food.
04/12/2019
Been making this for years. If you utilize Infinitesimal rice and two cans of cream soup you lot can skip cooking the rice divide. Tastes the same. I add together mushrooms. My boys grew up on this. Fast weeknight repast.
06/07/2005
This was o.k. I used Worcestershire Sauce in identify of the Soy sauce just for that different flavour. I also doubled the rice and used ground turkey. I take a couple cups of this mix out before adding the soup (picky non-canned soup lover husband). I also did non have chow mein noodles, so tried the canned fried onions. They were pretty practiced. Kept them covered for about of the cooking to avoid burning them.
12/06/2009
We don't add together the almonds or noodles because we don't like the crunch. I used foam of mushroom soup instead. I always double the batch. Keen every time! UPDATE: I don't broil this whatsoever more. It's fine on the stove elevation with modifications. I don't use almonds. I utilise 1/4 c water. I saute my celery and onions a fleck with some oil, and so add together the beef. So I toss it all together. Done in xv min.
07/13/2019
My Mom made this when I was a kid and information technology still brings dorsum then many memories. I usually double the rice, soup, and water. I also substitute the almonds for sliced h2o chestnuts. My family loves this. I likewise put the Chinese noodles around the edges and so that my picky eaters can eat without the noodles.
06/22/2005
I think this is a not bad like shooting fish in a barrel meal to make. My family loves it! I practice add water chestnuts to it (which adds alot)Enjoy
10/23/2007
This was alright. Mine turned out pretty dry. I toasted the almonds earlier adding them and then that added some good flavor. I've been making something similar for years using left over meat loaf and egg noodles. I retrieve I'll stick to that.
